OVERVIEW
The Peace, Transhumance and Development of the Pastoral Economy Project (PETRADEP) aim to enhance the pastoral economy’s role in fostering peace and sustainable food systems around Lake Chad, involving Chad, Niger, Nigeria, and Cameroon. Initiated in 2023 and co-financed by the German government (BMZ) and the European Union (EU), the project is managed by GIZ in collaboration with the Lake Chad Basin Commission (LCBC) and various local, national, and regional partners.
The project’s specific goal is to boost the resilience of households and cross-border (agro)pastoral systems in economic stability and conflict prevention, focusing on five components: Conflict Prevention, One Health, Value Chains, Governance, and Dissemination of Good Practices.

KEY ACTIVITIES
Conflict Prevention
• Implement training of 223 Traditional Heads in mediation skills across 21 Local Governments in Adamawa State, supported by a tailored manual.
• Educate 273 Adamawa State Peace Committee members in cross-border mediation with Cameroon.
• Construction of Livestock Market Infrastructure and access to drinking water conflict free routes.
• Establish two dialogue platforms for cross-border discussions between Adamawa, Borno, and northern Cameroon
• Start Community Development Planning in Adamawa and Borno, beginning with Local Government plans in Song and Fufore.(Sector and Ward analysis done)
One Health
• Build capacity for 1,500 livestock stakeholders to improve disease surveillance and management.
• To vaccinate 500,000 animals to enhance herd immunity against transboundary diseases.
• Aim for 30% compliance with livestock certification at border points to boost trade.
• To raise awareness in 7 to 9 local government areas and cattle markets to improve knowledge of animal health risks, targeting 50,000 individuals.
• Strengthen animal health systems in Borno and Adamawa to improve compliance with international standards.
Livestock Value Chain Development
• Develop a sustainable dairy value chain with advanced technologies and digital market linkages for 100 beneficiaries.
• Provide feed formulation training for 100 beneficiaries.
• Enhance productivity for 150 women in dairy value chains with quality assurance and market linkages.
• Train 300 beneficiaries in feed formulation and fodder production.
Results or expected results
• Peaceful and inclusive governance of cross-border livestock mobility is strengthened.
• The protection of pastoralist households and domestic ruminant herds from transboundary animal and zoonotic diseases is improved.
• The incomes and living conditions of pastoral and agropastoral households are improved.
• The political and regulatory framework, regional and in the territories, is favourable to transhumance, livestock trade and the circulation of quality inputs.
• The implementation approach of the Lake Chad component is aligned with the other components and lessons learned are widely disseminated.
